“They believe this is incredibly unfair, according to one of Lisa Kudrow’s friends, and no one saw this coming because they felt like he was in a really good place and that he had one of his best years.”

All six cast members reunited back in 2021 to celebrate the hit series. In the HBO special, Matthew broke down in tears following an outpouring of love from his co-stars.

Courteney, who playing his on-screen wife Monica Geller, said: “It was an incredible time. We became best friends,” to which Matthew confessed: “Yep, I’m going to cry now.”

Matthew was found unresponsive in a hot tub at his house on Saturday. An LA Police spokesperson confirmed that “there were no obvious signs of trauma” and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of his death is currently unknown and has been “deferred”. BBC reports that the post-mortem examination was inconclusive and officials are awaiting the results of toxicology tests.

Friends co-creators, Marta Kauffman and David, and executive producer Kevin Bright, issued a statement on Sunday paying tribute to the “brilliant talent”.

They said: “We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew’s passing. It still seems impossible. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives.

“He was a brilliant talent. It’s a cliche to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew’s case, there are no truer words. From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us.

“We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment – not just to his work, but in life as well. He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart.”

They concluded with a poignant take on the series’ episode titles: “This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken.”
